“Fun Experiments”: Ideas to get you started

In my November newsletter, I wrote about "The Myth of the Big Career Change" and how you can actually be more effective by starting small (sign up and I'll send you a copy). In the article, I tell how you can test out your areas of interest by doing simple "fun experiments". Here are some ideas to get you started:

The internet is a great place to start: just search for your favorite things in Google. Here's another Google tip: you can search blogs by going to the "more" link at the top left and then selecting "Blogs". There are blogs on any subject you can think of: antique watches, perfumes, chihuahuas, just to name a few.

Are you a foodie? Check gourmet grocery stores for tastings and free cooking lessons. Wine shops regularly offer wine tasting classes.

Pull that guitar out of the attic and put it where you'll see it.

Like music? Pull that guitar out of the attic and put it where you'll see it. You can also rent musical instruments from most music stores

Want to work with kids? Most elementary schools need volunteers to read to kids during school. You can also volunteer to be a Big Brother or Big Sister

Like the outdoors? Local groups meet for hiking, skiing and other trips.

Like animals? Volunteer at the Humane Society, or call a local vet to ask where you can help.

Need more ideas? Take a lunch break and go to your local public library. Walk through the non-fiction section and grab any book that looks interesting.
